Opening Principles

DEFINITION

The fundamental guidelines that help players reach a strong position in the opening: control the center, develop your minor pieces, avoid moving the same piece twice, and castle your king to safety.

Why It Matters

CircleChess analyzed 39,862 beginner games and found that while these principles are easy to learn, they're much harder to apply consistently — 58% of games break at least one of them within the first 8 moves. Center control is nearly universal (99% compliance), but castling and avoiding repeated piece moves lag well behind.
