Center Control
DEFINITION
Occupying or influencing the central squares (d4, e4, d5, e5) — with a pawn, or by developing a knight to a natural square — to give your pieces greater mobility and more attacking options.
Why It Matters
Of the four core opening principles, center control is the one beginners have fully internalized: CircleChess's analysis of 39,862 games found 99% contest the center within the first four moves. Coaches don't need to spend more lesson time here — the harder work is castling and piece development.
