DEFINITION
Knights and bishops — valued at roughly three pawns each, and generally the first pieces brought into play in the opening, ahead of the major pieces.
Why It Matters
Knights are usually developed before bishops because they have fewer good squares available — a common guideline is knights, then bishops, before launching any attacks.
