Major Pieces

DEFINITION

The queen and rooks — the most powerful pieces on the board, generally brought into active play only after the minor pieces are developed and the king is safe.

Why It Matters

Bringing the queen out too early, before at least two minor pieces are developed, is a well-known beginner pitfall — it lets the opponent gain time by attacking the queen while continuing their own development. CircleChess's data shows this lesson has mostly landed: only 15% of beginner games bring the queen out early.
