Which opening do players trust the most? We analyzed 40,759 games played on Caissa and found one opening clearly ahead of the rest. The Italian Game appeared in 14.2% of all games, making it the most popular choice — 29% ahead of the second most-played opening.

Methodology
CircleChess analyzed 40,759 human-vs-human rated beginner games played between 3 Jan 2026 and 3 Jul 2026 (same cohort as the Openings study). The opening of each game was identified using standard opening classification (ECO mainline), and the frequency of every opening family was calculated to determine overall popularity. Games with an unclassified opening (5.0%) are excluded from the rankings.
